Back to Basics Beanie

Lately, I have been teaching the basics of crochet to a few of my friends. Many have asked me to show them how to crochet a hat/beanie. The first beanie I ever crocheted was one that was worked in the round from top down. I decided that this approach was probably the easiest to show them.

My Back to Basics Beanie is for those who are new to crochet and are looking for a beanie pattern that uses basic crochet stitches and techniques. This pattern is also great for seasoned crocheters as well! It is crocheted in the round and uses on the the half double crochet stitch and the slip stitch. I chose to add a little texture at the brim. I love the simplicity of this beanie pattern. I have included instructions for a fitted beanie and a slouchy beanie.

I chose to use Caron Simply Soft for this pattern. This was my first ever yarn that I worked with when learning to crochet. I love this yarn because it is available in almost any store that sells yarn. It comes in so many colors that I have lost count. I love the sheen that it gives as well as the stitch definition. It is a great beginner yarn.

Winterscape Beanie

So if you haven’t figured it out by now, my favorite thing to crochet is beanies. For me, they are by far the easiest and quickest accessory to crochet. I am not a big fan of projects that take up a lot of time. This beanie is incredibly easy to crochet. It is a very quick project as well. If you are running up against time for a gift, this beanie fits the bill! You can make this beanie without the faux fur pom-pom as well.

The yarn I used for this beanie is Cloudborn Superwash Merino Bulky. You can get it from Craftsy This yarn is one of my absolute favorites to work with. Even though this is a bulky weight yarn, it has a gorgeous drape to it. It is one of the reasons I used it for my Pink Lady Cowl. Another plus is that it comes in so many beautiful colors! You are sure to find a color you like!

Berry Stitch Ear Warmer

I know not everyone is a beanie/hat kind of person. Personally, I love when the Winter comes around so I can wear all my winter beanies. My twin sister on the other hand, never wears a beanie. I’m not sure why she doesn’t wear them but it is one thing we do not have in common. I feel that an ear warmer is a good compromise to not wearing a beanie. I plan on giving this ear warmer to my sister for Christmas. Hopefully she will wear it.  [Read more…]

Easy Tunisian Beanie

Currently, I don’t know how to knit. I actually tried learning how to knit before I learned how to crochet. For some reason I just could not grasp holding two needles together. I wanted to learn because I love the look of knitted pieces. Maybe some day I will learn, but for now I am happy with the look of Tunisian crochet.

If you have never tried Tunisian crochet, you have to! It looks harder then it is, I promise! The Tunisian Knit stitch looks exactly like a traditional knit stitch. The body of this beanie is crocheted using only this type of stitch. The band is crocheted using both the Tunisian Knit stitch and Purl stitch. These are the only two types of stitches you will need to know to crochet this beanie.

This beanie is extremely beginner friendly. I would recommend watching the video tutorials below before you start. They are very helpful in showing the different stitches and how to bind off.

I hope you enjoy this pattern!

NOTES

~ The first loop on your hook is the first stitch.

~ The Return Pass is always the same throughout the pattern.

~ You will experience some “curling” with your work. This is normal in Tunisian crochet.

Bind off leaving a long enough tail to sew short sides of the beanie together.

To bind off : The bind off in Tunisian crochet is similar to how you work slip stitches in traditional crochet. To Bind Off, insert hook under the next vertical bar from right to left, yarn over and pull up a loop through both the vertical bar and the loop on hook. Watch video tutorial above.

What your work will look like after 31 rows.

Line up short sides and sew together.

Next, attach yarn to a slip stitch at the top of the beanie. Thread a needle and weave the needle in and out of each ss until you reach the beginning. Pull to tighten and fasten.

I made my own faux fur pom-pom. If you would like to make your own you can follow the video tutorial HERE.

If you love a knit look like me, I really hope you try this pattern!

The Lenape Slouch Beanie

So last week I shared with you my pattern for the Lenape Cowl. I really loved the cowl so much that I decided to make a slouch beanie. It is crocheted using the same Twin Cluster stitch. Spectrum Beanie

This week here in Jersey has been hot, very hot! But that hasn’t stopped me from crocheting all my fall and winter patterns! I love being able to work with chunky yarn again! As some of you may know, it’s my favorite kind of yarn to work with. A couple months ago, I noticed Lion Brand put out new colors in their Thick and Quick line. So of course I had to get my hands on them lol! [Read more…]

4 Crochet Beanie Patterns

4 Crochet Beanie Patterns!

I LOVE BEANIES! What’s not to love, right? They make great gifts and can be crocheted in so many different styles for so many different people like friends, relatives, coworkers babies etc.

Beanies are great because they help keep your head and ears warm in the long and cold Winter months. They also can help cover up a bad hair day! haha! C’mon we’ve all been there 🙂

Below are 4 free easy crochet beanie patterns that are created using beginner stitches. Even if you are an experienced crocheter, these beanie patterns are easy to whip up and make perfect gifts!

Primrose Beanie – This beanie is crocheted using the Primrose stitch. This stitch consists of single crochet and double crochet stitches. The band is created by crocheting slip stitches in the back loop only. You can also crochet this beanie using any worsted weight yarn in any colors you like! The pom-pom is completely optional but I feel it adds a little something extra!

Every Girl Slouch – This beanie pattern is one of the first patterns I ever crocheted. I love this beanie because it goes with just about any outfit and can be crocheted in just about any color! It is my go-to beanie for any occasion. It is created using the same band as my Primrose Beanie. It uses the double crochet and single crochet stitches to create the body of the beanie!

Alabaster Slouch – This beanie is crocheted using a worsted weight yarn. It is created by crocheting the band first and then slip stitching to create a circle. The body of the beanie is crocheted in a continuous round so there is no need to join. I love the color of this beanie. It reminds me of both beige and grey. Some call this color “greige.” If you are wondering what color it is, click the link to find out 🙂

Wonderland Beanie – This is one of my favorite beanies! It is very easy to crochet. The pattern is  repetitive but makes for a very fast and straightforward design. I love the way the slip stitch and half double crochet work together to create such a beautiful texture. It is the same stitch sequence I use in my Cozy Cocoon Cardigan and Fluffy Clouds Infinity Scarf.

I really hope you have enjoyed these beanie patterns! Feel free to take a look around and check out some of my other patterns!

Happy Crocheting!

Primrose Slouchy Beanie

Beanies and hats are hands down my favorite thing to crochet. I think one of the reasons why they are my favorite is because they can be crocheted multiple ways. I typically crochet my beanies either top down (in the round), bottom up (creating a band, joining the band, then crocheting the body and cinching at the top) or by crocheting a rectangle, sewing the shorter ends together, and then cinching the top. Easy Herringbone Slouch

Have you ever used roving yarn?  I have been wanting to create a pattern using roving yarn for a while now but I just never seemed to get around to it. There have been so many times when I had it in my hands and was ready to buy but always ended up putting it back and getting distracted with some other kind of yarn lol! Roving yarn is yarn that is usually bulky and is not twisted or plied like many other types of yarn. It is created in a long and narrow bundle of fiber.  It can be used for felting and is incredibly resilient. [Read more…]
