A beginner friendly crochet pattern that works up quickly – The Bedrock Crochet Beanie is worked by creating short rows.
Inspiration
There seems to be a trend going around in the crochet world known as short rows. Basically, short rows are a technique where partial rows are worked to create shape. Although I have worked short rows before, like in my Ribbed Fisherman Beanie, I have never worked any other stitch than the slip stitch back loop only. I thought it would be fun to create a simple and stylish crochet beanie that incorporates other stitches.
The Bedrock Crochet Beanie is a complete beginner friendly pattern that consists only of slip stitches and single crochets. A beautiful wool yarn is used to crochet this pattern, but if you are allergic to wool, you can use any #4 worsted weight yarn.
The Yarn
The Yarn I used to crochet the Bedrock Beanie is Lion Brand Wool Ease Origins Roving yarn. This is a 100% Wool yarn that is a #4 medium weight. It comes in 14 gorgeous hues. I originally thought this yarn was going to be too scratchy but I was very wrong. This yarn not only worked up beautifully, but is so soft and cozy. I bought this yarn at Michaels Stores, but you can also purchase it on the Lion Brand website. Substitute yarns include Patons Classic Wool Roving and Schachenmayr Original Wash Filz it Fine.
Like mentioned above, if you are allergic to wool, you can use any other worsted weight yarn for this pattern. Just make sure to check the gauge before starting the pattern.

SIZING
This hat pattern is designed to fit size teen/women head circumference of 21-23 inches
GAUGE
Gauge is approximately 13st across x 12 rows = 4”
NOTES
– The entire beanie is crocheted flat using short rows.
– The pattern is written for one panel of the Beanie. You will then repeat the sequence of rows for the next 3 panels totaling 4 panels in all.
– Be sure to make your turning chains loose. These turning chains will be worked into for a portion of the pattern.
– This pattern can easily be adjusted by adding more/less stitches to the starting chain.
– Simply add more stitches to the starting chain if you would like to add height to your beanie, and simply delete stitches if you prefer less height. (If you choose to adjust the chain count, make sure it is an EVEN number of stitches).
– If you need to adjust the circumference of your beanie, crochet less rows of each panel before you begin to work in the “unworked” stitches of each row.
PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS
Ch. 32
Row 1- ss in the 2nd ch from the hook *sc in the next ch, ss in the next* Rep *until there are six chains left. 1 ss in each of the last six chains. (31)
Row 2 – Ch.1 turn, ss blo in each of the first six stitches, sc in the next. *ss in the next st, sc in the next* Rep *until there are two stitches left. Leave the last two stitches of the row unworked. (29)
Row 3 – Ch.1 turn, ss in the first st, (place a SM) *sc in the next, ss in the next st* Rep *until there are six stitches left. 1 ss blo in each of the last six stitches. (29)
Moving forward, make sure to place a SM in the first st of the beginning of each ODD row.

We now will be increasing the stitch count of our rows by working into the unworked stitches of each row.
Row 14 – Ch.1 turn, ss blo in the first six stitches, sc in the next st. *ss in the next stitch, sc in the next* Rep* across the row. Then, insert hook into the turning chain of the previous row (blue SM in photo) and the blo of the st in the row below (3 loops on your hook) yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook. Then, ss blo in last st. (21)
Row 15 – Ch.1 (loosely) turn, Place a SM in turning ch if you have a hard time locating the turning chain), ss in the first st, *sc in the next, ss in the next st* Rep* until there are six stitches left. 1 ss blo in each of the last six stitches. (21)
Row 16 – Ch.1 turn, ss blo in the first six stitches, sc in the next st, *ss in the next st, sc in the next* Rep* across the row. Then, insert the hook into the turning chain of the row below (pink SM), and into the row below that (blue SM). Then, insert your hook into the blo of the st below (4 loops on hook) yarn over and pull through all four loops on hook. Ss blo in the last st of the row. (23)

Repeat Rows 2 thru 25, 3 more times for a total of 4 Panels.
Slip stitch sides together by starting at the bottom and working your way up to the top of the beanie. Bind off leaving a long enough tail to sew the small hole at the top of your beanie closed.
Weave in all ends!
