Inspiration & Design

I feel it’s been ages since I’ve worked with color and  I thought it was time to add a little  to my wardrobe. My thought was to design a fun and comfortable sweater that even a beginner can crochet. I love the idea of being able to pick your own colors. It’s a fun way to show off your personality.

crochet colorblock sweater pattern

I wanted to keep the design of this crochet colorblock sweater very simple. The entire sweater is crocheted with single crochets. I thought this was fitting since  the single crochet is usually the first stitch a beginner learns.

The construction is also very simple. If you can crochet a rectangle, you’re more than halfway there! I wanted the sleeves to be slightly oversized to add a cozy vibe.

The Yarn

This comfy crochet colorblock sweater design uses a lightweight yarn called Stylecraft Special DK that you can purchase from Lovecrafts online. It’s a durable 100% acrylic yarn that comes in a whole range of beautiful colors. I really love this yarn because even though it’s extremely affordable, you can still create something stunning and gorgeous. It’s also extremely soft. I love that this yarn has over 85 colors to choose from. The possibilities are endless when it comes to choosing a color palette. If you are looking for a substitute, Paintbox Simply DK would be a great choice.

Construction

The construction of the crochet Colorblock Sweater is fairly simple. It consists of crocheting two rectangular panels. The front panel has a little shaping at the neckline. The two panels are then sewn together at the sides and the top of the shoulders making sure to leave room for the armhole. The sleeves are then crocheted by attaching yarn to underneath the armhole and crocheting in the round. Ribbing is then added to the sleeve cuffs and the bottom of the sweater.

Sewing Your Panels

Lay your back panel out flat with the Right Side (RS) facing you.

Lay your front panel out flat on top of your back panel with the RS facing down.

You should now have RS facing together.

With a spare piece of yarn, thread a tapestry needle and whip stitch each front panel shoulder to the back panel, lining up the outside edges. Make sure to use Color D yarn.

Next, sew sides of front and back panel together making sure to use the correct color yarn for each block of color. Refer to the Sizing section to know how much room to leave for armhole.

Ribbbing- Sleeve Cuffs

The ribbing is worked with a technique that allows it to be joined to the edge of the sleeve through slip stitches. I highly suggest watching the video tutorial HERE before you start to crochet the cuffs.

With Color A yarn still attached to sleeve

Ch. 11

Row 1 -Start by making a sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. Continue making a sc all the way down the chain. You will have 10 sc.

Next, make a slip stitch in the next 2 sc of the edge of sleeve.

Row 2 – Turn work, skip the 2 slip stitches you made and work a sc blo in the next st and each st remaining of the row, working back up the band. (10)

Row 3 – Ch.1 turn, sc blo in every st down the row (10). Make a ss in the next 2 sc of the edge of the sleeve.

Continue repeating rows 2 and 3 vertically until you have worked all the way around the edge of the sleeve.

Join both ends of ribbing by either sewing or slip stitching ends together.

Ribbing for Bottom of Sweater

The ribbing for the bottom of the sweater is crocheted in the same way as the Sleeve Cuffs.

Attach Color A yarn to the edge of the bottom of the sweater.

Ch.11

Repeat the steps included in the ribbing for the sleeve cuffs. Work your way all the way around the bottom of the sweater. Join both ends of ribbing by either sewing or slip stitching ends together.

Trim for the Neckline

Attach Color D yarn to edge of opening of the neckline. Ch.1 and complete a row of sc all the way around the neckline. Join the round with a ss to the first sc you made. Bind off.

Weave in all ends!
