crochet maya crossbody

Hi Guys! I have another free pattern for you, the Maya Crossbody Bag!  I love crocheting my own bags. I feel crochet bags can be the most versatile accessory to make. There are so many options when creating your own. You can choose how many straps, what kind of closure….button, snaps, drawstring? You can even choose how many colors to incorporate!

For this pattern I wanted to try something different. It’s no surprise I love color. I love being able to use more than one color and technique in my designs. I decided to mix traditional crochet with some tapestry crochet.

Don’t let the word “tapestry” scare you. If you know how to change colors and carry yarn, then it should come natural. If you don’t know those techniques, then I would recommend looking at a few tutorials on Youtube before starting this pattern. It will definitely help!

The Maya Crossbody Bag consists mostly of traditional crochet except the middle “arrow” looking part. That is where the tapestry technique takes place. If you would like to see my other bag design using tapestry, you can check out my Mochila Bag pattern.  I’ve included a chart to follow for this part, but I have also included written instructions for those rows as well!

Maya Crossbody Bag

Before you get started, HERE  is a great video tutorial explaining how to read a chart, change colors and carry yarn. (Start video at the 14 minute mark).

So I hope you follow along!

Rounds 14 thru 21 are worked using the tapestry technique. You can either follow the chart below for these rows, or you can follow the written pattern for these rows. Every round is joined with a ss. All stitches in the chart are worked in sc blo!

The chart is read from right to left. The “x” indicates where you will start.

Round 14 – (Ivory) Ch.1 sc blo in the same st and the next 4 stitches, (Light Teal) sc blo in the next 5 stitches. *(Ivory) sc blo in the next 5 titches, (Light Teal) sc blo in the next 5 stitches.* Repeat* til the end of the round. (70)

We will now be working with Warm Blush. At this point, you can cut Light Teal as to not get the strands twisted.

Do not Bind off

Strap

Row 1 – Ch.1, sc in the same st and the next 9 stitches. (10)

Row 2 – Ch.1 turn, sc  dec in the first st, sc in the next 6 stitches, sc dec in the next. (8)

Row 3 – Ch.1 turn, sc in every st across. (8)

Row 7 – Ch.1 turn, sc in every st across. (4)

Repeat Row 7 until your strap reaches your desired length. Keep in mind that your strap with stretch!

Now we need to increase our stitches to match the base of the other side of the strap.

Row 1 – Ch.1 turn, 2 sc in the first st, sc in the next 2 stitches, 2 sc in the last st. (6)

Row 2 – Ch.1 turn, sc in every st across. (6)

Row 3 – Ch.1 turn, 2 sc in the first, sc in the next 4 stitches, 2 sc in the last st. (8)

Row 4 – Ch.1 turn, sc in every st across. (8)

Row 5 – Ch.1 turn, 2 sc in the first st, sc in the next 6 stitches, 2 sc in the last st. (10)

Row 6 – Ch.1 turn, sc in every st across. (10)

Bind off leaving a long enough tail to sew the strap to the other side of the bag.

Count 26 stitches from the last stitch of the completed base and begin to sew your strap into the 26th stitch. Sew the rest of the strap to the edge of the bag using each stitch as a guide. You should have 26 stitches on each side in between each strap. See pic below.

You can choose to close your bag however you like. I chose to sew a button on the front center. I then thread a piece of suede lace going through the back center from inside the bag to the outside. I then made a knot at the end of the lace. See pic below. Fasten to button.
