Fall has officially begun and that means it’s time to start crocheting Beanies! The Rockport Beanie is a fun pattern that is not only easy to crochet, but will also keep you warm all winter long.  As you may already know, beanies (toques, hats etc.) are my favorite accessory to crochet. In addition, they make for a great beginner project as well.

Scroll down for the free pattern, or you can purchase an ad free version HERE.

Disclosure: There are some affiliate links below, but these are all products I highly recommend. I won’t put anything in this post that I have not personally used or tested.

The Rockport Beanie is worked in the round. When I first learned how to crochet, this method was the one I used the most when crocheting a beanie. In addition to this method teaching you how to work in the round, it also teaches you how to join with a slip stitch and increase stitches. I was so proud when I completed my first beanie. Of course it probably looked like crap but it still felt good to finish! 🙂

The Yarn

The Rockport Beanie is crocheted using Lion Brand Color Made Easy. This is a great #5 acrylic bulky yarn that comes is many gorgeous colors. I bought mine at my local AC Moore but I have also seen it at Joann’s. Any comparable yarn will work for this pattern. The faux fur pom is optional but I thought it added a nice touch. I bought my pom at Joann’s.

Construction

First, the Rockport Beanie is worked by making Half Double crochets in the magic circle. After that, you will turn your work and make slip stitches in the back loops only. The entire beanie is worked in only these two stitches. I love how the slip stitches worked in the back loop gives each row strong definition.

However, if working in the round is not really your thing, I will also be releasing another beanie pattern next week with the same stitch. However, the construction will be different.

  • Each round is joined with a ss to first stitch of the round.
  • A Ch.1 is made at the beginning of each round.
  • The Rockport Beanie is worked by alternating HDC rounds with SS BLO rounds.
  • Any comparable #5 bulky yarn will work with this pattern.
