Disclosure: There are some affiliate links below, but these are all products I highly recommend. I won’t put anything in this post that I have not personally used or tested.

In this post I show you how to crochet the Summer Nights Cardi. This is a light and airy cardigan that features a fun mesh stitch.

If you know me by now, you know that I love to try new yarn. I mean, who doesn’t? I just love browsing the yarn aisle and looking at all the different colors and textures. I am constantly keeping my eye out for what’s new and how I can incorporate it into a design.

The Yarn

I actually bought this new Flikka yarn by Lion Brand a while ago. This yarn is a cotton and polyester blend . At the time, I didn’t have a project in mind. I just knew the Keepsake color reminded me of sand and shells and the beach. I fell in love with the color!

I decided to make a cardigan because even though the summer days can be hot, it can get quite breezy and chilly at night. We like to go to the boardwalk and the amusement rides at night in the summer, so I knew this Summer Nights Cardi would come in handy on those nights. I wanted to keep the design light and airy. I really hope you enjoy this pattern 🙂

NOTES
    • The Summer Nights Cardi pattern is worked in three pieces from the bottom-up: the back panel and two front panels.
    • The collar is worked by picking up stitches along the front panels and back of neck.
    • If you would like to make the cardigan longer, follow the repeated rows for the back and front panels.
    • If you would like to shorten the length of the cardigan, crochet fewer repeated rows for the back and front panels.
    • Whenever it says to sew/seam two pieces together, always flip them inside out and whip/mattress stitch them together to get a cleaner look.
    • I highly suggest blocking your back and side panels of this garment. After submerging my pieces in water and ringing them out, I pinned my pieces on cardboard and let them dry overnight.
    • Sleeves are crocheted by attaching yarn to underneath armhole and working in the round.

SEW/SEAM

Take both Side Panels and lie them on each side of the Back Panel with wrong side facing you. Sew both side panels to the top of the Back Panels using the whip/mattress stitch.

Sew each side from the bottom all the way up to where you would like to have the armhole. This length is up to you. I left 7in for the armhole. See Pic

TRIM

With right side of cardigan facing you, attach yarn to bottom of one of the side panels of the opening.

Row 1 – Ch 3 and dc all the way around the opening. For the trim, the stitch count does not matter. For reference, my stitch count is 160 dc.

Row 2 – Ch. 3 turn, dc in first st and each stitch all the way around. For last st, dc in top of ch 3 of previous row.

Round 3 thru 6 – Repeat row 2

SLEEVES

Attach yarn to opening of one of the armholes. Preferably underneath where armpit will be.

Round 1 – Ch.3, make 32 dc all the way around the opening of the armhole. Join with ss to first dc. (32)

Round 2 – Ch.3, dc in same st and each st around. Join (32)

Rounds 3 thru 14 – Repeat Round 2

Round 15 – Ch.3, dc in the same st and the next 5 stitches, dc dec in the next. *dc in the next 8 stitches, dc dec in the next* Repeat* til there are 5 stitches left. 1 dc in each st left. (29)

Rounds 16 thru 18 – Repeat Round 2 (29)

Round 19 – Ch.3, dc in the same st and the next 3 stitches, dc dec in the next. *dc in the next 8 stitches, dc dec in the next* Repeat* til there are 3 stitches left. 1 c in each st left. (26)

I’m having a problem , I’ve done my first 4 rows of double crochet I’m two rows in on the mesh rows and my piece is not straight , it’s curving , looks like an arch ?

      • croydencrochet@gmail.com says

        September 11, 2018 at 7:59 am

Yes, that is completely normal. Just continue with the mesh stitch. Once you start the dc rows again, it will straighten out. 🙂

Is the chain 3 in beginning of row count as a double crochet?

Yes, for every row of double crochet 🙂

I’m making the large size. When I stitched the pieces together, the gap between where each of the front panels meets the back seems much too narrow compared to your picture (only 6 or 7 stitches compared to your 14ish for the medium). Did I do something incorrectly?

        Hi Sarah!

I’m not sure I understand what you are describing. Is there a way you can email me a picture so I can better assist you?

She said it was fine, and it did work, but the finished product ended up with a folded/rolled collar. I was hoping for it to lay flat and it just doesn’t.

Ok so I’m confused I did rows 1-13,then repeat these again twice giving me 39 rows, then it says the pattern repeat is 4 rows of dc followed by 8 rows of mesh stitch followed by 1 row of single crochet, so not sure how this fits into the pattern as the next row is row 40. I did the pattern without where it says about the pattern repeat and it doesn’t measure correctly……..HELP

        Hi Carol

Yes, so after row 13 you will complete rows 14,15,16,17 with dc. Then rows 18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25 will be the mesh stitch. Then row 26 will be a sc row. You will then repeat that same sequence for rows 27 thru 39. Then next row will be row 40. Hopefully that helps!

Hi. Love the pattern and I am a bit confused. I have watched the video and you indicate ch 3, ss into missed dc stitch etc. The pattern says chain 4, ss into missed dc stitch etc. Should I be using the chain 4 as per pattern or the chain 3 as in the video

      • croydencrochet@gmail.com says

        January 28, 2020 at 11:10 pm

        Hi Janet!

You will ch.4 like the pattern says. The video was only to show you how to work the stitch. 🙂

Hi there! In the written pattern there is basically a repeat of 3 times for the double crochet and mesh (rows through 39) but in the picture I am seeing a repeat of four. The repeat of 3 seems short. Thank you

    10. Sarah Ward says

      June 20, 2021 at 9:17 pm

I finished the body – blocked the pieces and when I sew it up it is super short. Is this how it should be? This sweater is way too short to be a long cardigan. Disappointed in it but don’t want to take it apart. Is there an error in the pattern?

      • croydencrochet@gmail.com says

        June 22, 2021 at 9:18 am

It’s definitely not supposed to be short. In fact, it’s on the longer side. There is no error in the pattern. You can always add more rows if you want it longer. Without seeing a picture, I can’t see what the error is. Sorry
