I am very excited so share this new Velvet Crochet Hooded Pullover design with you! A while back, when Bernat came out with their new velvet yarn, I bought a bunch of skeins in hopes that I would come up with the perfect design to use them for.
Originally, I thought I was going to design some sort of cardigan with this yarn, but as I got thinking I thought how nice it would be to crochet a warm and comfy pullover with a hood. I get cold ALL THE TIME! I am always wearing some kind of hood or turtleneck around the house. It’s my thing π Having a hood to cover my head and neck is a must. Also, it’s cozy, so why not?
I also wanted to make the length of the pullover a little longer than a typical sweater. I like to wear leggings a lot, so I wanted something that would flatter that look. The length is something that can easily be altered depending on your preference.

Do you wanna know what the best part is about this pattern? It is designed using only single crochets! Yes, that’s it! Because of the way the velvet yarn lays, I had to make a very dense fabric for the pullover. An open and airy look just wasn’t going to work for this yarn.
I would consider this velvet pullover a great first sweater pattern. If you can single crochet, then this pattern will be manageable. There is some sewing but it is very minimal.
Construction
The construction of this pullover is quite easy. It consists of a front and back panel. Sleeves are crocheted in a continual round so no need for joining. However, you will need to use a stitch marker. The hood is then created by crocheting a big rectangle that is then sewn together at the top.
I really hope you enjoy crocheting this pullover pattern. It is such a great first sweater design if you are a beginner. It is so soft and cozy, you won’t want to take it off! Enjoy π

PATTERN NOTES
- This crochet pullover is worked in two pieces: A back and front panel. The sleeves and hood are added after the panels are sewn together.
- If you would like to make the pullover longer, simply crochet more sc rows for the back and front panels.
- If you would like to shorten the length of the pullover, simply crochet less sc rows for the back and front panels.
- Whenever it says to sew/seam two pieces together, always flip them inside out and whip/mattress stitch them together to get a cleaner look.
- The sleeves are crocheted by attaching yarn underneath armhole and then working in continuous rounds. YOU WILL NOT JOIN! A stitch marker is used to keep track of rounds. There are specific rounds in the sleeve where you will make decreases.
- The hood is crocheted by attaching yarn to one side of the bottom βvβ in the front panel and making scβs up and around the collar and down the other side. This will form a rectangle that is then sewn together at the top.

HOOD:
Refer to diagram below on where to attach yarn.

Row 1 – With front panel facing you, begin to make sc’s up right side of opening of neckline, across the back, and down the opposite side of the neckline. The number of sc’s you make does not matter. Just make sure to have the same number of sc’s for each side of the neckline. This will make the hood nice and even. For reference, I made 22 sc up the right side, 21 sc across the back, and then another 22 sc down the left side for a total of 65 sc.
Rows 2 thru 58 – Ch.1 turn, sc in every st across.
After completing Row 58, you will have something that looks like a rectangle. Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise and sew along the top to close. Bind off.
EDGING:
Attach yarn to bottom of pullover and complete 2 rows of sc all the way around the bottom edge. This will give the bottom of the pullover a cleaner edge.
Weave in all ends!

Thank you for this pattern! I just finished mine and LOVE it! Super cozy in bernat velvet yarn! I added a fun kangaroo pocket to it, I think it turned out ok. Thanks so much!
So glad you love it! Thanks for sharing π
Hi! Love this pattern! Just looking for a wee bit of clarification. When it says to start the hood by going to the right, how exactly does one do that? I can’t seem to figure it out. I naturally go to the left when I crochet, being a righty, and this has got me right confused lol! Would it matter if I went the other way?
Hi Lori!
I’m assuming you mean working up the right side, then across the back, and then down the left? You can definitely do the opposite if that works better for you. It will not affect the outcome of the hood π Hope this helps!
Looking forward to making this hoodie. Just a question – how many grams/yards is your skein?
Thanks
